Hormonal Imbalance

What usually comes to mind when someone hears the word ” hormonal imbalance” is a person in complete disarray emotionally, crazy and frantic one minute, sobbing the next. It’s an assumption one makes due to our societal conditioning. Having a hormonal imbalance goes beyond having an occasional mood swing. There are a large number of hormones secreted in the body and therefore a hormonal imbalance may be related to any number of those hormones. Dependent on gender and age, the symptoms of hormonal imbalance will vary. The problem in diagnosing issues with one’s hormones is that symptoms are often similar to symptoms of a wide variety of medical complaints.

Hormones affect every aspect of our health

Hormones are chemical messengers secreted by our endocrine glands that affect every single aspect of our health which includes our appearance and emotional stability. Hormone levels decline as we age, and more significantly after we reach 30. Our hormones are also affected by environmental toxins, stress and inflammation. Most often when we start to feel unwell it could indicate that our hormone levels are not balanced.

How to Balance Hormones
Our bodies are sophisticated. All the systems of the body have specific roles to perform and they work together to keep us functioning at optimal levels. Much like a factory everything is systematic. Our hormones are at the frontline, giving orders to all the cells. Quadrillions of cells all following the commands from our hormones. It is no surprise then, that our hormones have the power to significantly enhance or deplete our health.Hormones are chemicals that are manufactured by glands. They are released into the bloodstream and transported according to the message received. There are a great variety of cells in the body. There will be some that are capable of responding to the hormonal message and others that are not equipped for the job. Just like in business, employees will respond to the orders of their direct manager. Work is often delegated to specific employees whose experience and skill-set match the job requirements. Cells do not respond to every hormonal message. Yet, they have the capacity to identify what job best suits them (multiple receptors are present indicating their suitability for the job) and will obey orders readily.

Hormone Balancing

Hormones need to be in balance in order to achieve homeostasis. Having too much of a certain hormone can result in abnormalities. There are a number of things hormones can do for the body. Keep in mind that hormones are only the “messengers” that get the cells to act.  They go out into the body when told to by the gland (higher management) but it’s the cell that actually does the work necessary.

Hormones affect the body in a number of ways:

  • Mood
  • Metabolism
  • Growth
  • Reproductive Maturation
  • Aging
  • Fight or Flight (Protective Instincts)

Be in tune with your body and what is going on around you. Any change in your health or body deserves a better look, especially if you seemingly keep going to the doctors with no resolve. The first thing on the agenda is to get all your hormones tested and be honest with your doctor regarding any environmental factors or stresses that could be causing this imbalance. Don’t just assume that your symptoms are to do with age degeneration. Yes, it is natural to age, but you don’t have to suffer health complications resulting in a reduced quality of life. Don’t just go down with the ship. If it’s as simple as establishing new messages within your body so that you get the best out of your golden years – why not? Surely your loved ones including children and grandchildren would appreciate having more time with you. Imagine minimises all the aches and pains, feelings of unease and lowered confidence, imagine the increased energy and zest for life, including love relationships and intimacy.

There are a number of tests available, some are blood tests, others saliva or urine tests. Keep track of your symptoms and the duration you have noticed any changes in your body.
